Text Box: May 2006 Volume 1, Issue 1 Text Box: The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program in Nebraska is a cooperative venture between the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and community centers.  Nebraska’s five centers—based in Beatrice, Grand Island, Norfolk, Scottsbluff, and Omaha—provides services through the surrounding counties.  The centers are 501(c)(3) nonprofit entities and governed by independent local boards of directors. The Nebraska AHEC program is under the umbrella of the Rural Health Education Network (RHEN) at UNMC. Established in 2001, the Text Box: What the Heck is an AHEC? Text Box:   Text Box:   Text Box: Nebraska AHECs work to:        Create a heightened awareness of the health professions among  K-12 and non-traditional students with emphasis on minority students.        Develop a model of interdisciplinary health care through training in community- based settings        Use cutting edge information technology applications to support AHEC programs throughout Nebraska.   Text Box:        Promote collaboration between communities to support health professions continuing education         Provide health education outreach programs to meet the needs of partner communities. Text Box:   Text Box:   Text Box: Southeast Nebraska AHEC is Ready to Help You   Text Box: Located on the campus of the Southeast Community College campus in Beatrice, the new Southeast Nebraska Area Health Education Center (SE-AHEC) is centrally located to assist the 17 counties in southeast Nebraska that comprise its service area.  The AHEC plans several activities for the coming year, including hosting Text Box: several 8th grade regional science meets, working with teachers and school councilors on career preparation for students, and participating in career days and community health fairs with area schools and community partners. The AHEC also looks forward to partnering with local hospitals and others on continuing education opportunities for local providers.
